When it comes to the best things to do in Key West, many locals will tell you to learn about the area’s incredible history. But where can you do that? You’ll want to pay a visit to the Key West Lighthouse. This breathtaking spot is not only a great place to learn about local history, but it’s also the perfect spot for a photo op or to enjoy the sunshine. Plus, it’s not far from our most popular Key West waterfront vacation rentals!
History
Constructed in 1848, this beautiful lighthouse is easy to reach. The very first version of the Key West Lighthouse, interestingly enough, was only manned by a single person. And guess what else? That brave soul was a woman! For a lighthouse keeper to be a female, back in the day, was a rare, if not unheard of, occurrence, which is what made this so special. It takes guts to man a lighthouse!

This special little lighthouse has been through multiple upgrades ever since then, as you might imagine, including an extension on the tower portion itself that has included a stronger and more visibly reflected, greater–distanced light (which many came to call the Third Order Fresnel Lens, the technical term for the piece installed on the tower itself). The Keeper’s Quarters were also significantly expanded since then, on many levels; not to mention, the light itself has been converted over to electric light. Electric lighting is more convenient and useful these days, anyways.
Did you also know that the lady Lighthouse Keeper was properly relieved of her post later in 1969? It was nothing wrong on her end, but it was rather simply the fact that advancements in science and tech allowed for the lighthouse, like many lighthouses everywhere, to be manned without a constant Keeper. The maritime heritage of Key West, all in all, would not be the same without the rich history of this little lighthouse, of which we are all the most thankful. You ought to check it out upon your visit to this grand area!
